St. Barths—also known as St-Barth, St. Barts, and Saint Barthélemy—is a French-speaking Caribbean island known for its luxe vibe and perfect beaches. St. Barths is home to many high-end restaurants, designer stores, and yachts, but not a lot of land or people: the population of the 9.26-square-mile island is around 10,000. With no direct flights from the US, this little piece of paradise in the French West Indies isn't super easy to reach, but that's part of its allure.

St. Barths has no public transportation or bus system. Taxis are available, but are limited in number and require advance planning through the hotel concierge. Across the island, reservations are highly recommended for a night out, regardless of group size. Hotel concierge can assist also with any booking needs.

NEIGHBORHOODS TO KNOW

The island is quite small, and driving around it takes about 30 minutes max. St. Barths’ separate neighborhoods are not divided up as distinctly as on other islands, but there are still two main neighborhoods you should know about, because most visitors choose to stay in proximity to these two spots.

Gustavia: Gustavia is the capital of St. Barths and the island's main town. This is where you'll find a hub of activity, from shopping to groceries to galleries, businesses, and restaurants. Wander the streets at your leisure or simply enjoy watching the yachts in the harbor that the town encircles.

St. Jean: The small village of St. Jean is the most popular place outside of Gustavia; it also has great restaurants and shopping, and is close to the island's only airport. Here, you'll also find the picture-perfect crescent of sand called St. Jean Beach, where there's a natural coral reef to enjoy if you can manage to pry yourself off the sand. Eden Rock and many beach clubs are along the same stretch.

Rent a Moke

There is no better way to explore the island’s many scenic spots and attractions than a Moke, the unofficial mode of transportation on the island. These small, open air vehicles are perfect to rent for a day or two and easy to navigate along St. Barths' winding roads and narrow streets. Renting a Moke in St. Barths is a fun and unique way to see the sights and experience the island's laid-back, tropical vibe.

Enjoy the beaches

The island has a lot to love, but the beaches are its main attraction. There are 16 (!) of them in total, each with its own distinct personality. Our favorite beach activity includes a “second seating” lunch at one of the glamourous beach clubs along St. Jean beach, including music, dancing, and magnum bottles of rose.

Do the Colombier hike

Though the Colombier hike leads to a private beach only accessible by foot or by yacht, it remains one of the must-do activities in St. Barths. If you don't want to brave the hike, consider a boat day to Colombier to snorkel.

Visit the island's capital, Gustavia

Gustavia is the capital and main town of St. Barths, wrapping a U shape around the harbor. Our favorite activity in town is strolling the harbor and boutiques by day and visiting the “part restaurant part nightclubs” at night. History lovers can also wander the ruins of Fort Gustave or Fort Karl.

SUGGESTIONS FOR A NIGHT OUT

Bonito

This place is just plain fun. The drinks come in ridiculous glasses (think a copper bath tub with a rubber ducky), the music is blasting, and the entire restaurant crowd is there to have a good time. They actually have really good food too.

Bagatelle & Le Petite Plage

Similar to Bonito, Bagatelle and Le Petite Plage are places to go when you want a dinnertime scene. They’re right next to eachother, always packed, and always defined by a DJ. Stay late enough through and people will start dancing on tables, champagne bottles in hand.

Eden Rock

The super iconic hotel has a great open-air bar and restaurant, and is and a favorite of the “see and be seen” crowd. Great for people watching and a lower key dinner, with a likely bonus celebrity sighting.

L’Isola

L’Isola is the option when you’re looking for a more romantic, less crazy venue. The restaurant offers Italian cuisine in a dark, moody setting.

Le Ti

This kitschy nightclub is a guaranteed good time. The food isn’t great, but the atmosphere is silly and fun. When it’s time, the staff take you to a secret back room, dress you up like you’re going to Burning Man, and send you off onto the dance floor. Hot pink mullets, matador capes, and feather boas are standard attire.

Zion

Tucked away off the beaten path in St. Jean, Zion is the spot for foodies. Super creative dining experience run by a fabulous French chef. Relaxing scene (no dinnertime DJs!) and innovative dishes. Tasting menu recommended.

Tamarin

If you're seeking a more casual-feeling restaurant that still maintains the vibe of St. Barths, Tamarin is a cool spot. The intimate garden atmosphere and French fare make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fancy jungle.
